Situational Awareness Mapping Interface

Interface Design, UI Design, Custom Icon Creation

As a visual designer within provincial law enforcement at E Division, I was tasked with redesigning the interface of a custom-built mapping tool to enhance its usability and effectiveness for decision-makers. The tool provides critical information for situational awareness during live calls and asset dispatch.

Key Responsibilities

  • User Research: Conducted in-depth research to understand the needs, goals, and pain points of the primary users: Divisional Duty Officers (DDOs), Critical Incident Commanders (CICs), and District Advisory Non-Commissioned Officers (DANCOs).
  • Persona Development: Created a detailed user persona based on research findings, representing the typical DDO and their operational challenges.
  • Interface Design: Redesigned the interface layout to prioritize essential features and improve navigation based on identified user pain points.
  • Data Visualization: Optimized data visualization techniques to ensure clear and effective presentation of critical information.

Project Outcomes

  • Enhanced User Experience: The redesigned interface provided a more intuitive and efficient experience for DDOs, CICs, and DANCOs, improving their ability to make informed decisions.
  • Improved Situational Awareness: The tool’s enhanced capabilities contributed to improved situational awareness and faster response times during critical incidents.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: The tool empowered decision-makers with access to previously unavailable data, enabling more informed and evidence-based decision-making.

This project demonstrated my ability to effectively combine user research, design skills, and a deep understanding of law enforcement’s operational needs to create a valuable situational awareness tool.

Final Interface Layout

Through iterative testing and feedback, the tool was refined to provide a more intuitive and user-friendly interface, enhancing decision-making capabilities for on-shift managers during high-stress events. Key insights from the testing included:

  • Improved clarity and readability of key data points
  • Enhanced responsiveness of the tool under high-stress scenarios
  • Increased confidence in the accuracy and reliability of the provided information

These findings contributed to the overall refinement of the tool, making it a valuable asset for law enforcement professionals.
